Eurovision 2014: Molly Smitten-Downes chosen as UK entry

Molly Smitten-Downes, a little-known singer from Leicester, is this year's UK Eurovision Song Contest entry.
Molly Smitten-Downes will perform her own song, Children of the Universe, when the contest comes to Copenhagen on May 10.

The 26-year-old from Leicestershire is an unsigned singer-songwriter who has been making music for a decade.
The BBC said Miss Smitten-Downes provided “the perfect combination of contemporary songwriting and real vocal quality”. Her song is described as an “anthemic” and “uplifting” track.
The choice is surprising, perhaps, given entrants are usually household names, while Miss Smitten-Downes is largely unknown outside her home town of Nottingham, where a radio DJ has been playing her songs.

But as she takes to the Copenhagen stage, for the 59th annual contest, Miss Smitten-Downes will perform her self-penned song, Children of the Universe, in a bid for glory before an estimated 120million global viewers.

In recent years, Britain’s entrants have tended to be recognisable names from the past, who have perhaps fallen by the wayside in mainstream culture.
